I have two more tips to consider when using YouTube:

1. Consider YouTube's terms of service before submitting your video. In particular, carefully consider how closely you want to control your ownership of the video given YouTube's ownership clause, which provides YouTube with "worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Content in connection with the Service and YouTube's (and its successors' and affiliates') business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels."

That means YouTube and any YouTube successor owns your video and can use it or a part of it for any promotional campaign. In many cases that is not a concern, however, if your video contains sensitive content that, if taken out of context, could jeopardize your relationship with the talent in your video, you may want consider publishing your video directly on your web site, where you will retain full ownership.

2. Keep a backup copy of everything you publish and, ideally, make everything accessible in a second online location. YouTube regularly takes down content for a variety of reasons (see EFF involvement, article about the breakdown of take down requests by country, one person's experiences, and a NY Times articles - there is much more if you search yourself). If you are posting political material that will be opposed by people in power - you expect your content to be taken down and have plans for how people will view it when it is taken down. The last thing you want is for your big publicity moment to fizzle because your video is not online any more.

Thanks for the links. Good timing: I'd just been thinking about this as my org has been talking about what it needs to be sending out to members and allies. I agree with Bhagat's view, especially that "Many nonprofit newsletters are unfortunately poorly executed." From what I see, especially in orgs that are just starting to rely on email, we try to transfer too much over print.
